Sentinel lorries were popular with commercial vehicle operators early in the 20th century but by the 30s were being threatened by the many diesel engine lorries coming on to the market. Drivers had to be very organised to make sure they didnt run out of coal or water. Also the fire had to be lit long before any journey was made. However when driving along the Sentinel was a very quiet lorry that emitted no dodgy emissions other than steam and a little soot.
